The Agony Of A Slipped Disc

Table of Contents:
Slipped Disc

A disc herniation is more commonly known as a slipped disc, a common condition that affects the intervertebral discs of the spinal column. It is one of the many conditions that can affect the spinal column, others can include thinning discs, degenerative discs or bulging discs.

What is a slipped disc?

A slipped disc is a spinal disc that has shifted out of its original position, applying pressure and compression to spinal nerves and to the sciatic nerve that runs through the spine. This causes extreme pain due to compression of the nerves and can result in severe muscular spasms.

There are many causes of a slipped disc, some of which include trauma to the spine through physical injury or accident, strenuous lifting of heavy items, ageing or obesity. Disc herniation can occur at any time to anybody, although it is often seen in people between the ages of 35 to 55 who drive for extended periods of time or perform tasks of heavy manual labour. A disc herniation will often result in the need for permanent chronic medication within western medicine.

So how does Ayurveda manage to treat disc herniation so naturally and safely?

Within the science of Ayurveda bulging and slipped discs are attributed to an imbalance of the Vata element, the element comprised of air and ether. This imbalance disturbs the body’s natural equilibrium, causing the pain associated with a slipped disc.
Ayurvedic treatments not only address this imbalance of Vata but also help to restore functional spinal strength and address nerve damage. This results in relief from the muscular pain and spasms that are associated with a slipped disc too.

There are many highly effective treatments within Ayurveda that can be used to treat and heal a herniated or bulging disc. They are highly beneficial in a variety of ways as they not only address the issue of the slipped disc but also promote healthy joints by increasing circulation and helping to strengthen the supportive spinal tissue.
