Proneness to Disease and Illness In Ayurveda

Table of Contents:
Diseases Tridosha

All diseases and our proneness toward them is determined by our individual constitution. In other words, people with a Kappa constitution have a tendency to be afflicted with disease and illness associated with Kappa.

During their lifetime they may well experience repetitive incidents of bronchitis, congested lungs, sinusitis or tonsillitis. People with a Pitta constitution are known to be susceptible to disorders that affect the skin, like rashes, psoriasis and hives. They also suffer from gallbladder and liver disorders, peptic ulcers, inflammatory diseases and hyperacidity.

Vata types are highly susceptible to sciatica, paralysis and neuralgia. They are also often affected by excessive gas, pain in the lower back and arthritis. Most Vata disease and illness originate within the large intestine, Pittas are most often affected by illnesses or diseases in the small intestine and Kappas are prone to disorders that affect their stomach. The imbalance of humors in these specific areas will manifest in certain symptoms and signs within the body.

An imbalance which causes disease or illness may originate in the consciousness of the mind as a negative awareness, planting the seed of the affliction in the form of fear, attachments or unresolved anger issues. In turn, these negative emotions can then manifest into the body through the mind, resulting in disease and illness. The derangement of Vata can be caused by repressed fear, excessive quantities of pitta can be caused by anger and unbalanced Kappa by attachments, greed and envy.

These imbalances within the Tridohsa can have a serious effect on the bodies natural resistance and immune system and the agni (digestive fire) of the body. As such the body can become disease prone and susceptible to illness and poor health. There are occasions and times where the imbalance which causes the disease or illness first occurs in the body and then passes or manifests in the consciousness and mind. Environments, food consumption and living conditions similar to those of the dosha will be inimical to the bodily tissues.

They will first manifest an imbalance on a physical level, which will later, through a disturbance in the tridosha, affect the mind. For example, unbalanced Vata leads to the creation of fears, nervousness and depression, an excessive buildup of Pitta will create anger, hate and jealousy within a person’s psyche. Aggravated Kappa will lead to greed, unhealthy or obsessive attachments and possessiveness. Because of this we know that there is a direct connection between habits, diet, environment and emotionally manifested disorders
