Ayurvedic support for Grahani Dosha, disturbed Agni, abdominal cramps, irregular bowel movement, Ama accumulation, and gut-brain imbalance.
Definition
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. The intestinal wall normally shows rhythmic contractions called peristaltic movements, which help move contents through the tract. In IBS, the intestinal walls become sensitised even to mild stimulus, causing excess cramps and irregular bowel behaviour.
Digestive Fire
Ayurveda gives great importance to protecting Agni, the digestive fire. When Agni is normal, or Sama Agni, the person enjoys long life and freedom from disease. When Agni is seized by doshas, the person becomes vulnerable to a group of diseases.
Ayurvedic View
In Ayurveda, IBS is called Grahani Dosha, indicating a pathological state of function and integrity of the intestinal tract, especially the small intestine. Grahani is part of Maha Srotas, the alimentary tract, and is the seat of Agni. It holds food until digestion and then releases it.
Dosha Imbalance
Charaka Samhita describes imbalance in Agni as the root cause of this disease. Incorrect digestive fire leads to Ama accumulation and weakens digestion. Vata, Pitta, Kapha, or a combination of doshas may affect Agni and trigger complex Grahani Dosha.
