Depression is a common illness that affects mood, thoughts, emotional response, and daily life. It can make a person feel sad, unhappy, miserable, low, or disconnected from normal activities.
The major causes of depression include genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Other triggers may include alcohol or drug abuse, sleeping disorders, and stressful life events.
Vata-type depression may show anxiety, irrational fears, phobias, insomnia, paranoia, incoherent speech, and forgetfulness. Pitta-type may show anger, irritability, suicidal ideation, violent mindset, self-destructive behaviour, and alcohol or drug abuse. Kapha-type may show lethargy, apathy, dullness, excessive sleep, and heaviness.
In Ayurveda, depression is known as Vishada or Avasada. It may arise from vitiated Prana Vayu, Sadhaka Pitta, and Tarpaka Kapha, which can suppress Ojus and reduce the desire to participate in life’s activities.
Ayurveda believes that removing or staying away from the cause is half the treatment. The main line of treatment includes identifying the root cause, changing thought processes, counselling, correcting dosha imbalance, and strengthening Ojus.
