Depression

Ayurvedic support for low mood, emotional imbalance, lack of motivation, sleep disturbance, anxiety, and mind-body wellness.

Definition

Depression is a common illness that affects mood, thoughts, emotional response, and daily life. It can make a person feel sad, unhappy, miserable, low, or disconnected from normal activities.

Causes

The major causes of depression include genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. Other triggers may include alcohol or drug abuse, sleeping disorders, and stressful life events.

Symptoms

Vata-type depression may show anxiety, irrational fears, phobias, insomnia, paranoia, incoherent speech, and forgetfulness. Pitta-type may show anger, irritability, suicidal ideation, violent mindset, self-destructive behaviour, and alcohol or drug abuse. Kapha-type may show lethargy, apathy, dullness, excessive sleep, and heaviness.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, depression is known as Vishada or Avasada. It may arise from vitiated Prana Vayu, Sadhaka Pitta, and Tarpaka Kapha, which can suppress Ojus and reduce the desire to participate in life’s activities.

The Holistic Wellness Pathway

Ayurvedic Line of Treatment

Ayurveda believes that removing or staying away from the cause is half the treatment. The main line of treatment includes identifying the root cause, changing thought processes, counselling, correcting dosha imbalance, and strengthening Ojus.

1

Root Cause Analysis

Understanding the individual causes behind depression, including stress, sleep disorders, lifestyle patterns, emotional triggers, alcohol or drug abuse, and psychological factors.

2

Dosha Imbalance Correction

Correcting the imbalance of Prana Vayu, Sadhaka Pitta, and Tarpaka Kapha, which are associated with emotional and mental disturbances in Ayurveda.

3

Panchakarma Support

Ayurvedic cleansing and balancing therapies may include Vamana, Virechana, Basti, and Nasya, based on the individual’s condition and physician’s recommendation.

4

External Ayurvedic Therapies

Supportive therapies such as Shirodhara, Shiro Basti, Shiro Pichu, and Abhyanga are used to calm the nervous system, relax the body, and support mental balance.

5

Medhya Rasayana Support

Internal Ayurvedic support may include herbs such as Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Vacha, Shankhapushpi, and Jatamamsi, traditionally used to support mental clarity and emotional wellness.

6

Mind-Body Activities

Specific Asanas, Pranayamas, Meditation, Counselling, Introspection, Deep Relaxation Techniques, and Yoga Nidra are included as part of the healing process.

7

Food & Lifestyle Changes

Food and lifestyle recommendations are personalized based on the individual’s constitution, nature of depression, social environment, work pattern, and geographical conditions.
