Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease due to the lack of lubricating synovial fluid in the joints, leading to damage in cartilage, bone, joint capsule, ligaments, and muscles.
In Ayurveda, osteoarthritis is described as Sandhi Vata. It is a Vata Dosha disorder affecting joints, mainly knees, hips, spine, and joints in the hands. Imbalanced Vata dries up Shleshaka Kapha, the lubricating synovial fluid in the joints.
Symptoms often develop slowly and worsen over time. They include pain, tenderness, stiffness, loss of flexibility, crackling or grating sensation, and formation of bone spurs.
Ayurvedic treatment for osteoarthritis aims to balance Vata and nourish Kapha in the joints. It offers longer-lasting support without the side effects often associated with long-term pain-based management.
The principles behind Ayurvedic treatment are to balance Vata and nourish Kapha in the joints. At IVAC, the line of treatment combines Panchakarma, rejuvenative therapies, internal medications, activities, and personalized food and lifestyle support.
The first principle is to balance aggravated Vata Dosha, which is responsible for drying up the lubricating synovial fluid and causing roughness, pain, and stiffness in the joints.
Detoxification therapies such as Basti and Virechana are used based on the patient’s condition to reduce accumulated doshic imbalance and support better joint function.
External therapies may include Abhyanga, Patra Pinda Sweda, Navarakkizi, Dhara, Lepa, Basti, and Pichu to reduce pain, nourish the joints, and improve mobility.
Internal Ayurvedic medications are given to support Vata balance, strengthen the musculoskeletal system, and promote healthier movement and endurance.
Yoga, Pranayama, and Physiotherapy are included to help increase flexibility, maintain joint range, and improve overall quality of life.
Food and lifestyle recommendations are personalized according to the individual’s constitution, nature of work, and geographical conditions to support long-term joint care.
Regular yearly Ayurvedic therapies can offer excellent relief in many cases. In very advanced cases, surgery may be the only option, and patients are advised accordingly.
Every individual’s body constitution, joint condition, age, activity level, and severity of osteoarthritis are different. At Indus Valley Ayurvedic Centre, our Ayurvedic doctors assess your condition and suggest a personalized line of care.
