Gastritis

Ayurvedic support for stomach lining inflammation, burning sensation, nausea, appetite imbalance, digestive discomfort, acidity, and Pitta-related gastric concerns.

Definition

Gastritis is a common name for different kinds of inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach, known as the mucosa. It is characterized by stomach ailments such as stomach cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and sometimes blood with the stools. Gastritis is common today and can affect people of all ages.

Causes

H. pylori is a common gastric pathogen that may cause gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric adenocarcinoma, and low-grade gastric lymphoma. Other causes include unhealthy food, junk food, food cooked in adulterated oil or unhygienic conditions, excess caffeine, alcohol, stress, depression, sorrow, pain, side effects of some drugs, pernicious anemia, autoimmune disorders, and chronic bile reflux.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include anemia, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, burning sensation in the abdomen, chronic bile regurgitation, discomfort in the stomach region, coated tongue, and increased flow of saliva.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, gastritis can be correlated to Urdhvaga Amlapitta. It is mainly caused in people with Pitta constitution. When Pitta dosha gets vitiated, the chances of gastritis increase. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are situated in the grahani, or duodenum, which is the seat of digestive fire, Agni. Fasting, eating during indigestion, and similar habits derange Pachaka Pitta and Agni, leading to Amlapitta.

The Digestive Fire Restoration Pathway

Ayurvedic Line of Treatment

The Ayurvedic line of treatment for gastritis focuses on Agni Deepana, Ama Pachana, balancing Pitta, and Rasayana support to strengthen the system. Treatment modalities may include Panchakarma, external therapies, internal medications, specific activities, and advice on food and lifestyle changes.

1

Cause & Digestive Pattern Assessment

Understanding the individual triggers behind gastritis, including unhealthy food habits, junk food, excess caffeine, alcohol, stress, depression, sorrow, pain, drug side effects, autoimmune conditions, chronic bile reflux, and H. pylori-related digestive discomfort.

2

Agni Deepana

The first line of treatment focuses on Agni Deepana, or improving appetite and digestive fire, so digestion becomes more stable and the stomach lining receives better digestive support.

3

Ama Pachana

Ama Pachana focuses on digesting accumulated Ama, or metabolic toxins, which may contribute to heaviness, indigestion, coated tongue, discomfort, and disturbed gastric function.

4

Pitta Balance

Because gastritis is correlated with Urdhvaga Amlapitta and Pitta vitiation, the treatment pathway focuses on calming aggravated Pitta, supporting Pachaka Pitta, and reducing burning, nausea, and acidic discomfort.

5

Panchakarma & Therapies

Treatment modalities may include Panchakarma, external therapies, and internal medications based on the person’s condition, strength, digestion, Pitta imbalance, symptoms, and Ayurvedic physician assessment.

6

Rasayana & System Strengthening

Rasayana measures are used to strengthen the system, support recovery, and help the body regain better digestive resilience after repeated gastric discomfort or inflammation.

7

Food & Lifestyle Guidance

Food and lifestyle advice focuses on healthier dietary habits, avoiding junk foods, reducing excess caffeine and alcohol, eating in hygienic conditions, avoiding eating during indigestion, and building regular meal habits that support Agni and reduce Pitta aggravation.
