Rheumatoid Arthritis

Ayurvedic support for autoimmune joint inflammation, pain, swelling, morning stiffness, fatigue, and long-term joint function.

Definition

Rheumatoid Arthritis, also called Poly Arthritis, is an autoimmune, chronic, systemic inflammatory condition that affects various tissues and organs, principally the joints. If not addressed properly, it can cause deformity, painful joints, and interference with quality of life.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated to Ama Vata. It is caused by increased formation of Ama, which circulates through the body propelled by aggravated Vata, causing imbalance at the Dhatu level, blockage in circulation, and finally lodging in the Sandhi or joints.

Symptoms

Symptoms include fatigue, lack of appetite, low-grade fever, joint pain on the same joints on both sides of the body, morning stiffness, swelling, sleep difficulties, and in severe cases nodules under the skin, chest pain while breathing, numbness, tingling, or burning in the hands and feet.

Why Ayurveda?

Ayurveda describes the pain of Ama Vata as similar to a scorpion sting and shifting in nature. The treatment focuses on improving Agni, balancing Pitta-Vata, strengthening Kapha, digesting Ama, maintaining an Ama-free state, and balancing the Tridoshas.

The Holistic Wellness Pathway

Ayurvedic Line of Treatment

The Ayurvedic line of treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis focuses on Agni Deepana, Ama Pachana, balancing Pitta-Vata, strengthening Kapha, maintaining an Ama-free state, balancing the Tridoshas, and supporting the joints through Panchakarma, external therapies, internal medications, activities, food, and lifestyle guidance.

1

Agni Deepana

The first step is improving Agni, the digestive and metabolic fire, because weak Agni leads to the formation of Ama and contributes to the progression of Ama Vata.

2

Ama Pachana

Ama Pachana focuses on digesting and reducing Ama so that blockages in circulation can be reduced and the load on Dhatus and joints can be addressed.

3

Balancing Pitta-Vata

The treatment works on balancing Pitta and Vata while strengthening Kapha, helping reduce inflammatory patterns, pain, stiffness, and instability in the joints.

4

Panchakarma Support

Panchakarma may include Basti, Virechana, and Rakta Mokshana in very acute painful conditions, based on the physician’s assessment and patient condition.

5

External Ayurvedic Therapies

External therapies may include Abhyanga, Valooka Sweda, PPS, SSPS, Dhara, Lepa, Basti, and Pichu to support pain relief, circulation, stiffness reduction, and joint comfort.

6

Activities

Specific Asanas and Physiotherapy are recommended to support flexibility, movement, strength, and long-term functional improvement.

7

Food & Lifestyle Changes

Food and lifestyle recommendations are personalized according to the individual’s constitution, nature of work, geographical conditions, and the stage of Ama Vata.
